I believe words can expose secrets not worth keeping, blasting through the niceties, to expose that which is raw, honest, and complicated. I believe untold stories are a cemetery of lost wisdom and that which is deeply personal can open the doors to the universal and the political. In a world of imitations, brands, and falsities, we are all searching for a glimpse of something that feels real and authentic, something to dig our feet into. The stage can offer a space for us to gather and collectively hold our breath as we search for something that feels true.
Performance has the power to transform everyone involved, audience and performer alike. It is the performer’s responsibility to discover each moment anew on stage, to surrender to that moment, and inspire an audience to move from silence, to laughter, to tears. To me tears and laughter are close relatives. To me the personal story brought to stage as an offering, is what moves me to the edge of my seat.
I witness and engage in art for its power of transformation.
As a child all I wanted to be was a dancer, which is one of the few art forms I have yet to return to. On the cobble stone streets of Berlin, I practiced my Jennifer Grey back bend and started my performance and directing career, at the early age of 7, with a 80s pop rendition of Mary Poppins.
Currently my own work weaves together stories of my childhood in Berlin, my relationship to being German-American, my queer femme identity, my hilarious obsessions with any kind of self-help strategies, and my own attempt to finding earth bound truths worth digging my feet into. I believe in letting the stories that need to be told lead the way to the art medium that wants to tell it. As an artist I move from spoken word, to theater, to music, to film, and sometimes combine several art forms in a multi-media exploration on stage.
