grew out of the forest
This 60-minute solo performance blends live storytelling with looped violin soundscapes, intertwining the autobiographical with the traditional to reveal what is political, personal, and timeless.
Violin and loop station build an emotional landscape—sometimes mimicking rain, sometimes the rustle of an ancient tree, sometimes offering melodic intervals reminiscent of Irish airs. These sounds accompany a web of stories that move between the dreamscapes of Irish folklore, Alanis Morissette, VW vans, roller skates, and a queer coming-of-age journey shared by two friends searching for magic.
From fairy gateways to raven wisdom, the tales weave through the cobblestone streets of 1980s Berlin to the moss-covered branches of the Pacific Northwest. The tallest trees in the world reach as high as skyscrapers—because beneath the surface, they hold onto each other. But how can she feel her roots when split between cultures, parents, and continents?
Drawing from a background in creative writing, Katinka Kraft combines poetic sensitivity to image, rhythm, and sound with the immediacy and connective power of oral storytelling.
